Noticing a disconnect between the San Francisco that is shown to tourists and the city that one would show to their own family and guests, a group of friends at a Union Square hotel found themselves commenting frequently on the city's pre-packaged San Francisco experience that was largely created by national tour companies and seem bent on keeping out-of-town visitors within striking distance of corporate chain restaurants and stores that have nothing to do with the rest of the city. The only interaction most visitors have with San Franciscans is the low wage service employees wearing name tags and uniforms, as they ask if you'd like fries with that.
Although it seemed like there should be an easy alternative for people who want to explore the real city and encounter the authentic charms of San Francisco, in fact there was not. Many tourists who fly into the city will end up staying down near where tour hawkers and vendors have focused their operations. Many are put into contact with less than reputable operators before they even leave SFO. Asking for information at a tourist information booth, they unknowlingly may be talking with someone who is actually working in the Timeshare industry.
When they check in to their corporate wharf hotel, they are again approached to make tour reservations, and if later, they ask for sightseeing advice at their hotel's front desk any time during their stay, they might be told to take "such and such" bus tour and of course "such and such" bus tour company pays commission to those giving the advice to say just that. It's no wonder that many travelers to our great city never really get a chance to see our great city.
If they only knew what they were missing...Watching tourists wearing new sweatshirts purchased at a chain store on Powell Street make a daily round trip from hotel to the cable car to the wharf and back, our group of friends began to ponder,â€ť If they only knew what they were missing...â€ť
Then somewhere between making plans for SantaCon, the annual costumed holiday pub crawl on the way to a pop up restaurant in The Mission District and an out-of-towner innocently asking â€śAfter Fishermanâ€™s Wharf, what is there to do in San Francisco?â€ť , The idea to help travelers experience a more authentic San Francisco was born. With the idea and tourists need to be freed from the fake and have the real city revealed to them, they decided to figure out a way to show visitors the same city that San Franciscans show their own family and friends.
