North Beach/ Little Italy Food Tour
& North Beach Food & Wine Tour    north beach food

North Beach is a food lover's feast and we are delighted to be your guides on this wonderful North Beach Food Tour. As you enter this neighborhood you will begin to notice the scent of baking bread and the aroma of strong coffee. On our food tour, our stops and dining choices change but chances are we'll be having antipasti, appetizers, pizza, pasta, breads, and we'll likely end with canolli from one of the oldest and best Italian bakeries anywhere! But just to make sure we've covered all the bases, we will probably have tiramisu from an even older Italian eatery that first opened it's doors in 1880. We all love home made fudge as much as we love hand-made truffles, so we usually have both and let you decide which is your favorite! Some of the best coffee in the world is roasted right here in North Beach and we have been invited to observe their tried and true process.

We will start with pasta which is how they begin their meals in Italy and
along the way we will make at least 5 stops to eat at otherplaces. The focus will be Italian but we might throw in some other foods to mix things up. But one thing is for sure, it will be delicioso!

All of our tours are rich in history and this neighborhood has a wonderful past to share. During the Gold Rush of 1849, North Beach was home to people from all over the globe. Italians arrived in North Beach, mainly from the northern region of Liguria. Many of the first Italians to arrive were men, once these men had earned enough money for the passage, they would send for their families back home. By the 1880's, California had become a leading fishery and its coastal waters were dominated by Italian fishermen and their graceful sailing "felucca's"

In the 1900's Sicilian family blocks began to arrive in San Francisco in great numbers, attracted by relatively similar climate and  good fishing conditions.Competition heated up between the Northern Italians and the Sicilians, as they were referred to then. The restaurant scene flourshed as a result. That is the kind of competition where no one really loses! We support that.

The Latin Quarter is what this area was once called, as it not only was the center for the Italians but the Spanish speakers as well. To this day, there are still several Basque restaurants in the district, a mixture of French and Spanish influences, frequently we stop in at one of these eateries to try their unique dishes.

There is a lot to see in this historic and monumental district but come hungry because on this tour we will be focusing on the food of North Beach. And what great food it is!
