North Beach is that rare thing -- a neighborhood that manages to be a perennial hit with tourists, andalso to remain beloved by San Franciscans. Today, it's best known as San Francisco's Little Italy, with its high density of check-clothed ristorantes, cafes and Old World delicatessens. It's also a popular pilgrimage for fans of the Beat movement seeking the hallowed haunts of the Bohemian set. However, North Beach is no relic, and it has
much to offer beyond pasta and poetry. This is one of the most delighful neighborhoods to be found anywhere, the charming tree-lined streets are as inviting as the many sidewalk cafes that inhabit each block. The atmosphere is relaxed and European, the people you encounter are all seemingly intent on enjoying everything the day has to offer, and there is a lot to enjoy here.
This vital neighborhood is home to some of the liveliest nightclubs and bars in town. Also some of the most unusual events in San Francisco's past happened here and the past will come alive as your guide takes you back in time with colorful stories. Small boutiques carrying handmade clothing and imported goods dot the streets, particularly on upper Grant Avenue. Beautiful Eduardian houses dot the hillsides and steep sidewalks that graduate into staircases climb to houses which seem perched on top of the house just beneath. The main park, Washington Squareis always full of folks taking in the sunshine, or watching the fog drift by. Old men drink coffee and chat while they play chess. Groups of laughing women pour out of cafes clutching handbags while they put on their sunglasses. Waiters wearing long white aprons down to their shoes, greet customers, and suddenly you realize that everyone you've heard speaking, wasn't doing so in English but rather in Italian.
City Lights, original publisher of Allen Ginsberg's "Howl," is still one of the best bookstores anywhere, and founder Lawrence Ferlinghetti can sometimes be seen strolling the neighborhood. We might even catch a sight of Francis Ford Coppola, and if celebrity sighting is your thing, you may wish to wander into Tosca. Then there's Broadway, buzzing with neon and strip clubs adding an incongruous dash of sleaze to all the culture and history. Looking across Broadway islike looking into another country, well it would be if you were in Italy and across the border was China, because these two favorite San Francsico neighborhoods are right next to one another and have been neighbors since the formation of the city.
We will see the neighborhood sights including:
St Peter's and Paul's Church, Washington Square, The Barbary Coast, Columbus Ave, The National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, The Sentinel Building, Broadway, City Lights Bookstore, Tosca, Vesuvio, Specs Adlers Museum Cafe, The Beat Museum, and the actual haunts of the Beats.
We will see Janis Joplin's Grant Ave & Carol Doda's Condor Club.
We'll see where Barbra Streisand, Lenny Bruce, Bill Cosby and Phyllis Diller, Bob Newhart, Mort Sahl, and Woody Allen got their starts:
The Hungry i & The Purple Onion.
We'll see Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower, not to worry, we aren't climbing to the top, just looking. We may even see the famous parrots.
This fascinating tour will keep you spell bound by the colorful locals and stories of the colorful characters from times past and present.
Make sure you bring a camera as we will also be taking you to a semi-secret place that has one of the best views in North Beach and you don't have to climb to the top of Telegraph Hill to see it!
