The Castro Upper Market Neighborhood Food Tour

The Castro (Castro, Duboce Triangle, Upper Market)

The Castro District, Duboce Triangle, and The Upper Market neighborhoods have quietly been undergoing a food renaissance. The area, long known for its diversity and nightlife is now also known as one of the most important culinary destinations in the city. This is ground zero for a home grown and well fed neighborhood food revolution. Join us on this great food tour, as we explore San Francisco!

Head west on Market Street and once you cross Dolores, tree lined streets shade Victorian and Edwardian buildings where sidewalk cafes and hidden bistros serve global cuisines for sophisticated pallettes. Cafe society is alive and well here, and the mix of eateries reflects the diversity of the local residents. This food and drink tour in the Castro is led Wednesdays and Fridays.

New development in this part of the city has almost doubled the available restaurant space, and some of the best chefs in San Francisco have just recently opened new locations to receptive and enthusastic diners.

  • Leisurely stroll tree lined streets as the colorful street cars roll along Market Street
  • Experience the neighborhood and hear about its exciting past
  • Visit an ultra-modern food hall where some of San Francisco's most talented and up-and-coming chefs showcase their innovative cuisine
  • We may sip wine at a quaint sidewalk cafe, or margaritas at a trend setting modern day version of a taqueria
  • We may have French cuisine, or Japanese, Spanish, Korean, Burmese, German, Southern America, Thai, Middle Eastern, Italian, and/ or Seafood
  • We will stop at iconic neighborhood establishments that have been in business for decades
  • At the end of the 19th century this was Little Scandinavia, we will see some of the buildings that visually reflect that influence
  • See the Castro Theatre and hear about the Irish neighborhood of Eureka Valley
  • Once upon a time, this was considered by many to be Gay Mecca. Those days may be past, but the Castro's gay population is alive and well
  • We will eat our way through this exciting district and you will meet the chefs and restaurant owners who will share their stories with you
  • You will explore the neighborhood as an insider, a local, and by the time we have dessert you will feel like you live here
